The credit for founding Mother’s Day is given to Anna Reeves Jarvis. When her mother died, she started this movement to create a day to honor her mom and other moms for their hard work and influence on society. Jarvis’s mom organized women’s groups and events to promote health and friendship. It was on May 12, 1907, when Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mom in her late mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia. Soon after, almost every state was observing this holiday. Eventually, in 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill that recognized Jarvis’ idea and efforts and declared the second Sunday of May to be celebrated as Mother’s Day.
The story and history behind Mother’s Day celebrations in the UK are slightly different just like the date. During the middle ages, children went away from home looking for work and stayed where they found work. It was a custom for these children to visit back home parishes and their mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent, the Laetare Sunday. On their way, they would pluck wildflowers to present to their moms. This led to the tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day and presenting them with flowers.
Mother’s Day is usually celebrated worldwide by showering mothers with flowers, presents, and even a Mother’s Day card. Brunches and lunch dates with moms are always widely popular.
